"Kultaomenia hopeamaljoissa
ovat sanat, sanotut aikanansa" (Sanal. 25: 11).

"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver" (Prov. 25: 11).

Mistä voisi tietää, mitkä ja millaiset sanat ovat niin kallisarvoisia, että niitä voisi verrata kultaomeniin hopeamaljoissa?

How could I know what or what kind of words are those, which could be compared with golden apples in silver pictures?

Olen ajatellut esimerkiksi Joosefin sanoja. Joosef oli nuori poika, joka sai nähdä erikoisia unia lyhteistä ja taivaankappaleista (1. Moos. 37: 6 - 9). Olivatko hänen sanansa kultaomeniin verrattavissa, kun hän kertoi veljilleen ja isälleen unistaan? Jaakobin, (1. Moos. 37: 10) ja hänen veljiensä (1.Moos. 37: 5) reaktioista päätellen Joosefin sanat eivät ainakaan äkkiseltään vaikuta kovin jaloilta huolimatta siitä, että hän tyytyi kertomaan ainoastaan näkemiensä unien yksityiskohdat, jotka varmaan erikoisuutensa vuoksi ihmetyttivät ja askarruttivat myös häntä itseään.

For example I have been thinking about Joseph's words. Joseph was an young boy, who saw special dreams about sheafs and heavenly bodies (Gen. 37: 6 - 9). Were his words like golden apples when he told of his dreams to his brothers and father? Judging after the reaction of his brothers (Gen. 37: 5) and father (Gen. 37: 10) Joseph's words do not sound very noble although he told them only the details of his dreams, which surely caused ashtonishment even in his own mind.

Olisiko ollut parempi, ettei Joosef olisi koskaan kertonutkaan unistaan toisille? Olisiko Joosef välttynyt joutumasta myydyksi Egyptiin, jos hän olisi pitänyt unensa vain omana tietonaan? Tuskinpa vaan, sillä veljet olivat hänelle kateellisia jo ennen, kuin hän kertoi heille unistaan. Jaakob nuhteli Joosefia unien johdosta, mutta kenties hänkin sai niistä myöhemmin lohdutusta ja toivoa surressaan rakasta poikaansa. Unien suurin merkitys oli tarkoitettu kuitenkin Joosefille itselleen, sillä hänellehän ne annettiin ilman, että hän itse kykeni vaikuttamaan niihin mitenkään. Unet toteutuivat Joosefin omassa elämässä, ja ne estivät häntä katkeroitumasta kateellisille ja julmille veljilleen.

Could it be better not to tell anything of his dreams to his relatives? Could it be possible to avoid his fate to be sold to Egypt, if he kept the dreams as his own secret? Scarcely, for his brothers were envy even before his dreams. Jacob reproached him for his dreams, but maybe the dreams gave him comfort and hope afterwards when he was longing for his dear son. But Joseph himself had the greatest blessing of them; he had seen them whitout making any effort for that. The dreams were fulfilled in Joseph's life, and they prevent him not to get sour for his envy and cruel brothers.

Joosefin unet raivostuttivat Jaakobin poikia ja aiheuttivat heissä sydämettömän teon; he myivät nuoren veljensä Egyptiin, vieraaseen ja tuntemattomaan maahan ja valehtelivat isälleen villipedon raadelleen hänet (1. Moos. 37: 12 - 36). Tällä kateudesta kimmokkeensa saaneella teollaan he kuitenkin aiheuttivat ketjureaktion, joka itse asiassa pani Joosefin unet toteutumaan käytännössä.

Jospeh's brothers got angry with Joseph's dreams and the dreams caused them to handle Jospeh heartlessly; they sold their young brother to Egypt, to an unknown and foreign country and they lied to their father that a wild animal had savaged him ( Gen. 37: 12 - 36). So their envy caused a chain reaction, which make Joseph's dreams come true.

Erinäisten vaiheiden jälkeen Joosef kohosi Egyptin tärkeimmäksi mieheksi itse faraon jälkeen. Hänen viisutensa ja erikoisen lahjansa ansiosta koko Egyptin ja sen naapurimaiden kansat pelastuivat pitkästä ja koettelevasta nälänhädästä. Tieto Egyptin viljasta saavutti ennen pitkään myös Jaakobin perheen, ja veljekset lähtivät ostamaan perheilleen leipää Egyptistä. Astuessaan viljavarastojen valtiaan eteen ja kumartaessaan häntä, Joosefin unet saivat täyttymyksensä.

After some years Joseph was ascended to the most important position in Egypt after pharaoh himself. For his special talents the whole area around Egypt was saved from a long and testing starvation. Even Jacob's family heard the knews about the bread of Egypt, and Joseph's brothers went to Egypt. When they stepped before the lord of the granaries and bowed him, Joseph's dreams were fulfilled.

Oli tullut aika punnita Joosefin veljien puheet. Joosef asetti veljensä koetteelle. Hopeamaljan löytyminen nourimman veljen, Benjaminin, säkistä pani Jaakobin pojat kovaan totuuskokeeseen (1. Moos. 44: 1 - 34). Vuosien kuluessa he olivat varmaan huomanneet, minkä suunnattoman tuskan Joosefin kummallinen katoaminen oli aiheuttanut heidän isälleen. Kun nyt Benjamininkin henki oli uhattuna, luulisi, että veljesten taannoinen petos ja kateuden synnyttämät rikokset olisivat painaneet heidän omiatuntojaan niin paljon, että he olisivat tunnustaneet kaiken isälleen. Mistään sellaisesta ei raamatussa kuitenkaan kerrota. Joosefin kaunis ja rakastava sydän, hänen armollisuutensa ja runsaskätinen anteliaisuutensa antoi heille mahdollisuuden jättää kertomatta omista kurjista teoistaan ja tilaisuuden viedä sen sijaan isälleen yllättävä ilouutinen "Joosef on vielä elossa" (1. Moos. 45: 26).

Now it was a time to find out the words of Joseph's brothers. Joseph set a test for them. When they found a silver bowl in Benjamin's sack, the brothers had a crucible (Gen. 44: 1 - 34). During the long years they had surely noticed their father's huge pain after Joseph had disappeared strangely. When Benjamin's life was in danger I think their recent betrayal and crimes would press hardly their conscience and cause them to confess everything to their father. But nothing like that is told in the Bible. Joseph's noble mind, his loving, mercyful and generous heart make possible for his brothers to be quiet of their crimes and to tell only good knews for their father "Joseph is yet alive" (Gen. 45: 26).
